Have you been wishing to get straighter teeth? While age is no barrier to a straighter, healthier smile, most older teens and adults prefer orthodontic appliances which aren't obvious or hard to maintain. Your dentist in Cedar Springs, MI, Dr. Andy Setaputri, and his team offer discreet Invisalign aligners, the popular orthodontic system which has created beautiful smiles for teens and adults for more than 20 years.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign clear aligners are custom-made from biocompatible acrylic. Shaped to conform to upper and lower arches, these thin appliances gradually re-position teeth so they are straight and have a normal bite.

Patients wear 18 to 30 aligner pairs over the course of their treatment. They switch out pairs every two weeks as instructed by Dr. Setaputri, typically every two weeks, and come to the office in Cedar Springs, MI, every four to six weeks so the dentist can check progress. When their treatment ends (usually in about a year), patients wear simple retainers to keep their new smiles aligned for good.

Advantages of Invisalign

Besides being practically unnoticeable, Invisalign aligners are:

  • Smooth and non-irritating
  • Removable for meals, oral hygiene, and special events such as professional meetings or weddings
  • Easily cleaned with a non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Usable for a wide range of orthodontic issues
  • Gentler on gum tissue and tooth enamel (Dentistry IQ says Invisalign patients do not experience periodontal problems or enamel wear as people who wear metal, ceramic, or lingual braces do)

Additionally, Invisalign appliances do not restrict your diet. Simply take them out to enjoy your usual healthy diet, including apples, carrots, and other foods which loosen, dislodge, or break conventional braces.

Qualifying for Invisalign

To determine if you are a qualified candidate for Invisalign, Dr. Setaputri will perform a comprehensive oral examination, including a three-dimensional scan and digital X-rays of your mouth. With this information, the dentist digitally creates a treatment plan and shows you how your smile will appear during the various stages of treatment.

While some problems require conventional braces, Invisalign corrects many mild to moderate orthodontic issues, producing beautiful, lasting results. Teeth are straighter, more attractive, and bite together properly, making them easier to brush and floss.

Invisalign can correct:

  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Openbite
  • Overbite
  • Overjet (upper lateral incisors overlap lower ones)
  • Orthodontic relapse (teeth shifted after braces are removed)
  • Crowding
  • Gaps
